BT has overtaken Virgin Media as the number one broadband retailer in the UK. BT now has over 3.66 million broadband subscribers and a 26% share of the overall broadband market.
BT’s figures have been boosted by its acquisition of PlusNet where they gained 195,000 customers and another 245,000 subscribers in the quarter ending March 31st. BT had 32% of new DSL customers and 29% of all new ULK broadband customers in the last quarter.
This is great news for BT who have regained their top position after losing it to ntl: Telewest (now Virgin Media) last year. BT has also announced a £750 million deal to provide broadband and phone services to Post Office customers. This new contract will run for four years and will provide broadband, telephony, equipment and applications, such as web-based email and antivirus protection.
