Broadband FAQs

What is broadband?

Broadband is a generic term for an internet connection that is 10 to 100 times faster than a standard dialup internet connection.

Broadband differs from a dialup connection because it is 'always on' and you are able to make and receive phone calls whilst you are online.

Broadband makes it easier to download music, video or photos because of the speeds that data can be transferred using higher bandwidths than dialup.

Broadband speeds vary from 512kbps to 20mb and beyond.

Why should I get broadband?

A broadband connection enables you to get a lot more out of being online. You can send and receive information quicker and it is the end of busy signals or intermittent connections.

With a broadband connection you can surf the internet without tying up your phone line. Broadband also allows for multiple email accounts so you can differentiate between business and personal emails.

What types of broadband are there?

Typically, broadband is available in three ways:

Cable
Cable broadband connects your computer through a cable TV service (e.g. Virgin Media) and offers broadband at very high speeds.

ADSL
ADSL transfers high-speed digital data using the same copper telephone lines that you use to make and receive phone calls.

Satellite
Satellite broadband uses satellites orbiting the Earth to transmit data to a satellite dish attached to your home. This is used when a user doesn't have access to a BT enabled exchange or if the distance is too great.

You can also search the availability of broadband providers in your area by entering your postcode in our availability search box.

Do I need a BT line to get broadband?

You will need a phone line for ADSL broadband. This doesn't have to be a BT line - as long as your provider's exchange has been ADSL enabled.

For more information, please contact your phone line or broadband provider.

Is it available in my area?

To check to see which broadband providers operate in your area, enter your postcode into our availability search box on the homepage.

You can also check each individual service provider's website for more information about their service area.

What kit will I receive once I've signed up?

Most broadband service providers will supply you with the kit you need to setup a broadband internet connection and will upgrade your phone line to use broadband. A standard ADSL broadband kit might include:

A broadband modem (USB or Ethernet connection).
A broadband filter to plug into your phone socket.
RJ11 cable to connect to your filter.
An installation CD.
Installation instructions.

Depending on what provider you are going with, or if you are using a cable connection, this kit might differ. You will be provided with full instructions by all providers and there will be a helpline number for further enquiries.

How do I know if my computer can support a broadband connection?

Generally, if your computer is less than three years old you should be able to support a broadband internet connection.

For more detailed specifications, please check individual internet service provider websites.

How do I transfer my broadband to a new address?

If you have a broadband connection and are moving address or transferring to another line, you need to contact your broadband provider and let them know your new details.

Transferring you service to your new phone line will take a number of days, so check with your ISP for more detailed information.

How do I protect my computer from viruses and spyware?

If you are connected to the internet, it is a good idea to have antivirus and spyware software installed on your computer. There are many different options available and you can even get some software from free (as long as it is for personal use).

Some ISPs will recommend software to you or offer it as part of your package. You can also do your own research on the internet by searching for antivirus and spyware software.
